At the Salt & Light May 5, 2010 Food Distribution, we had our largest food distribution ever with 451 families receiving food. This year, so far we have averaged 387 families per week. The need is great and continues to grow each week. Salt & Light needs your help more than ever - please donate now - families in Champaign County need your help!

Donations

Salt & Light’s biggest need is your financial support.  Salt & Light is funded through donations from generous individuals, churches, organizations and businesses.  This is possible because our staff raises their own support, which keeps our administrative costs down allowing us to use the dollars donated for what they were intended-serving others.

The Need Is Great:
Out of the 102 counties in the state of Illinois, only 6 have more people living in poverty than Champaign County. Of those, none actually have a higher poverty rate. There are over 35,000 people in Champaign County living in poverty. (September 2009 Report on Illinois Poverty)

The average hourly wage needed to afford a 2-bedroom home in Champaign County is $12.17. The average hourly wage in Champaign County is $8.31. A person earning minimum wage in Champaign County would need to work 75 hours a week to afford a 2-bedroom home.

These are just a couple of the startling facts about the need in Champaign County. The need is great, but so is the response when people are educated about the need and how they can help.
