The Inside Story.
See how God used this once-in-a-lifetime event to change our ministry. For good.
In 2010, there were more than 8,000 children in poverty in our county.
The 2010 Federal Poverty Threshold defines $17,374 as the threshold for poverty for a family of three. However, the Self-Sufficiency Standard shows that it takes $45,598 for a family of three (adult, preschooler, school-age child) to make ends meet in Champaign County
Between 1999 and 2010, the number of people living in extreme poverty in Champaign County has increased nearly 60%.

As an organization, we strongly believe that one of the most important questions we need to ask ourselves is, “How do we define ‘help’?” How we answer this question should dictate the types of services we provide for those in material poverty. How “helpful” are those services that do not advance the difficult situations families and individuals face, but instead leave them stuck in the same plight, or worse, trap them there.
As we move towards the close of our 10th year in ministry we feel immensely blessed for the opportunities we’ve experienced to work with those in need, and what God has done. At the same time, we cannot begin to express how excited we are about the future of Salt & Light. We invite you to learn more about our vision and how you can be involved and check out our feature on ciLiving TV about how we are raising poverty awareness in Champaign County.
Light the Way is more than just a campaign name. It's what we strive to do by not only providing those we serve with the resources they need, but also teaching them skills that allow them to make changes in their lives.Learn more about our new awareness campaign "Light the Way" and how you can get involved and be a light in someone's world.
Salt and Light was featured in the June 16 issue of The News-Gazette. Here is an excerpt from the article.
Salt & Light's current budget of $370,000 is largely funded by donations, and only one-third of the support comes from regular monthly givers, Montgomery said. The organization finished last year barely in the black with the help of some donations that came in the last quarter of the year.
With so few donors contributing on a regular basis, it's hard to plan and budget, Montgomery said. So in hope of boosting the number of regular monthly donors, Salt & Light has launched its first fundraising campaign, called Light the Way. Our campaign is trying to remind people we're here and create a more stable base, Montgomery said.
We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God's ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more!
